Welcome to the third edition of EmpowerRD’s Grant Funding review. A look at some of the most interesting grant funding opportunities out there at the moment.  

For July 2022, we’ve selected a variety of fascinating competitions from Innovate UK, covering a number of themes ranging from Israel-UK R&D collaboration, to innovate UK’s smart grants.

Innovate UK Smart Grants: 2022

Smart is the UK government’s responsive grant funding programme through Innovate UK. This ‘open grant funding’ programme offers UK-registered companies the chance to apply for a share of up to £25 million for ‘game-changing, and world-leading ideas, designed for swift, successful commercialisation.’

To be eligible, the project must include one micro, small or medium-sized enterprise (SME) as the lead or a collaborative grant claiming partner. It must have started by 1 January 2023 and ended by 31 December 2025, and the project’s work must be conducted in the UK.

Also, if your project’s duration is 6 to 18 months, it must have total project costs between £100,000 and £500,000 and can be single or collaborative. Alternatively, if the project’s duration is 19 to 18 months, it must have total project costs between £100,000 and £2 million and be collaborative.

Ideas need to be genuinely new and novel, not just disruptive within their sector. Applications can come from any area of technology and be applied to any part of the economy such as, but not limited to:

  • net zero
  • health and wellbeing
  • technologies
  • the arts, design and media

UK – Israel Eureka Bilateral: Collaborative R&D

Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, is investing up to £2 million to fund collaborative research and development (CR&D) projects focused on industrial research with Israel.

The competition is for UK businesses that want to apply to the UK-Israel Globalstars Eureka competition and is a joint funding competition from the UK and Israel under the EUREKA framework.

UK applicants can apply for a total grant of up to £250,000 for each project. Your project must be collaborative and last between 12 months and 24 months. The start date depends on the national funding procedures of the Eureka members involved in the selected projects. The earliest start date will be May 2023.

Please note that under current limitations, this competition will not finance any procurement, commercial, business development, or supply chain work with a Russian entity as lead, partner, or subcontractor. This includes all items and services produced in Russia.

Innovation Loans Future Economy Competition – Round 4

Innovate UK is providing SMEs with up to £25 million in loans. These loans are available to innovative late-stage research and development (R&D) projects that show the most potential. There should also be a clear road map for commercialisation and economic impact. 

To qualify, your project must result in new products, processes, or services that are far superior to those currently accessible or offer innovative use of existing goods, procedures, or services. It can also involve a new or innovative business model.

It is worth noting that projects that focus on future economic areas included in the Innovate UK plan for action are encouraged to apply.

To be eligible for a loan of between £100,000 and £2 million, you must:

  • be a UK-registered micro, small or medium-sized enterprise (SME)
  • carry out your project from or in the UK
  • intend to exploit the results from or in the UK
  • give evidence that your business is suitable to take on a loan.

In addition to this, projects can last up to 5 years, including both the R&D and commercialisation phases. Projects are expected to start by 24 October 2022.

Design Foundations July 2022

Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, will invest up to £2 million in early-stage innovation projects that use people and planet-centred design processes and expertise.

The aim of this competition is to help businesses develop new ideas that will deliver benefits for people and the planet, aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. These can be for new and significantly improved products, services, places or business models.

To be eligible, you must be a UK-registered business and your project:

  • must have total costs between £40,000 and £80,000
  • start by 1 March 2023 and end by 31 August 2023
  • last between 3 months and 6 months
  • must take place in the UK and intend to exploit the results from or in the UK.

Fast Start: Innovation

Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, is offering small and micro-businesses a share of up to £30 million in grants alongside tailored business support delivered by Innovate UK EDGE.

You can apply for up to £50,000 for highly innovative ideas that have a clear route to commercialisation through business growth.

To qualify, your project must lead to new products, processes or services that are significantly ahead of others currently available, or propose an innovative use of existing products, processes or services. It can also involve a new or innovative business model.

Your project must:

  • have total project costs between £25,000 and £50,000
  • start by 1 November 2022 and end by 30 April 2023
  • last between 3 and 6 months in duration
  • take place in the UK and intend to exploit the results from or in the UK.
