Eligibility assessment Find out if your company can claim R&D tax creditsHMRC has a rigorous set of guidelines to determine whether your business qualifies for R&D tax credits. However, their criteria is challenging to interpret and can leave you asking more questions. To make the process easier we've devised a short 4-stage questionnaire to help you assess whether your business qualifies for R&D tax credits. Click below to get started. 1/4 - Your R&D projectsFirstly we’ll need to understand whether any of your business activities could count as R&D. Have you been working on any of the following types of projects in the past three years?Type of project* Developing a new product, tool or service Modifying an existing solution/technology Improving your internal processes or systems Adapting third party technology 2/4 - How you approached the projectSecondly, HMRC states that your specific project must have made an advance in science or technology. It sounds grand, but actually a lot of projects generate an advance. For example, if you looked at an off-the-shelf technology and instead built a bespoke application or machine to solve your problem then that work will likely qualify as an advance.Technical approach* We developed brand new technology internally We built on, or modified, existing technology We used a third party to develop new technology We used off-the-shelf technology without modifying it 3/4 - Who managed the project?Thirdly, the work needs to have been carried out by skilled professionals. These professionals will vary depending on your industry and field of R&D. Below are the most common professionals we see in our claims.Employee type* Developers Engineers Scientists Skilled artisans Architects 4/4 - Resolving uncertaintyLastly, HMRC require that the project involved some amount of uncertainty. If the project was a foregone conclusion then it wouldn’t count as R&D. HMRC also understands that, due to uncertainty, not all R&D has a successful outcome.Project challenge level* There was at least one significant challenge to overcome. The project was too challenging, so we didn’t finish it. The work was easy; we didn't experience any challenges. Success!
