Book a MeetingHMRC has a rigorous set of guidelines to determine whether your business qualifies for R&D tax credits. However, their criteria is challenging to interpret and can leave you asking more questions.
To make the process easier we’ve devised a short 4-stage questionnaire to help you assess whether your business qualifies for R&D tax credits. Click continue to to get started.
Firstly we’ll need to understand whether any of your business activities could count as R&D. Have you been working on any of the following types of projects in the past three years?
Secondly, HMRC states that your specific project must have made an advance in science or technology. It sounds grand, but actually a lot of projects generate an advance. For example, if you looked at an off-the-shelf technology and instead built a bespoke application or machine to solve your problem then that work will likely qualify as an advance.
Thirdly, the work needs to have been carried out by skilled professionals. These professionals will vary depending on your industry and field of R&D. Below are the most common professionals we see in our claims.
Lastly, HMRC require that the project involved some amount of uncertainty. If the project was a foregone conclusion then it wouldn't count as R&D. HMRC also understands that, due to uncertainty, not all R&D has a successful outcome.
